This second volume in a series is devoted to one of China’s leading contemporary composers, Jia Daqun, who often draws on the traditional music of his native country. The diverse selections presented here by the Ensemble Les Amis Shanghai and the Han Quartet include Flavour of Bashu, which borrows themes from Sichuan opera with its astringency, rhythmic uncertainty and distinctive piquancy. The Prospect of Coloured Desert is one of Daqun's most popular works, composed for Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. Counterpoint of Times is a chamber concerto of fascinating complexity, while the String Quartet has been enriched with folk tunes and vivid performing techniques.
