The celebrated Tippett Quartet's world premiere recordings of four of William Alwyn's early string quartets on this album will come as a delightful surprise. The quartets each inhabit quite different sound worlds yet are always original, memorable and often passionate and intimate. inexplicably, these works became neglected after receiving enthusiastic reviews when debuted in the 1920s and 1930s, a situation the Tippett Quartet has redressed with this project.
