Trumpeter Kenny Dorham released what many believe was the finest album of his all-too-short career in 1955, Afro-Cuban. Recorded over two sessions, one with a sextet, the other with a nonet, this album combines Latin music with jazz and showcases Dorham's distinct compositional and arranging skills. Considering the time period, the music on Afro-Cuban remains way ahead of the Latin-tinged and hard bop music that would follow in the late 1950s and 1960s. It also features a who’s who of Blue Note hard boppers: Hank Mobley and Cecil Payne on saxophones, J. J. Johnson on trombone, Horace Silver on piano, Art Blakey on drums and bassists Percy Heath and Oscar Pettiford.
