Part of a major recording series in which world-renowned singers draw listeners through a century of songs, this first volume focuses on the years between 1810 and 1820, a particularly auspicious period for vocal music when the piano-accompanied Lied came of age, thanks to the prolific efforts of Beethoven and Schubert. This instalment mixes the familiar with the rare, combining pieces by the great Austrian-German composers with more obscure selections from Spain, Bohemia and France.
