One of the world’s leading harpsichordists and a prolific recording artist, Scottish keyboardist Gilbert Rowland here turns to the suites of Johann Mattheson. A contemporary and friend of Handel, Mattheson was a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, a prolific composer, and also left important writings on the musical transition from Baroque to Classical in 18th-century Germany. Mattheson’s pièces de clavecin are rich and varied, and Rowland performs them with consummate skill on a double-manual harpsichord in the French style, modelled after a 1750 Goemans instrument.
