English soprano Susanna Fairbairn is joined by pianist Matthew Schellhorn for this collection of art song by 20th-century composers Geoffrey Bush and Joseph Horovitz. Bush was a British composer who stood as a conscientious objector during the Second World War due to his pacifist and religious convictions, and this release features such delights as his 3 Songs of Ben Jonson and archy at the zoo (told from the perspective of a cockroach), while Horovitz's contributions including the scena Lady Macbeth—a sparse and dramatic setting of moments from Shakespeare's play—which is counterbalanced by interludes such as the cheeky Foie-gras, performed with appropriate colour and character by Fairbairn.
