“When Thomas and the Symphony musicians are all moving together as one, through sparse soundscapes and massed music onslaughts, the effect can be transfixing.”
- Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle
Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony present their first-ever digital-only release with Berg’s fantastical Three Pieces for Orchestra. Written soon after Berg had heard Mahler's Symphony No. 9, the Three Pieces have an affinity with the older composer's use of motives and inclusion of march and dance figures. Presented in studio master-quality from the Grammy Award-winning in-house record label of the Symphony, this is is a transfixing performance of one of the works that brought Berg out of the shadow of his teacher Schoenberg.
