Primarily remembered today as a musicologist and music theorist, Sir Donald Tovey was also a composer, and by no means a dry academic one. This release from the Ormesby Ensemble is the second volume to explore chamber works by this eminent English figure, and includes the engaging and often unexpected Variations on a Theme by Gluck with the Brahmsian Piano Quintet in C Major, making for an expertly performed introduction to Tovey's creative works.
