Soledad has always specialized at interpreting works by some superb composers, however this album puts the emphasis on the ensemble's original material, as the title suggests. This release features eight pieces written by the members of Soledad inspired by a wide range of influences. Fleshing out the album is music by Gismonti, Pascoal and Jobim in a collaboration with Belgian singer Maurane. Originally founded to perform tango nuevo, Soledad is primarily based around the accordion/bandonéon, violin, piano, guitar and double bass.
"Soledad Plays Soledad is the album we have been dreaming of. Its creation is an obvious evolution. These years spent at the heart of the music of Piazzolla, Stravinsky, Devreese and Gismonti have sculpted the band’s sound. But they also have created a need for freedom, pushing us towards this visceral mode of expression that makes up the composition. We want to push the stylistic boundaries and further exploit the potential of this formation more than ever, thus forging our own language."
