"... isn't just an album that rewards repeat visits, it's a recording that demands them. A single listen is more than enough to make clear that there's something important going on here, as Virelles and his adept group create an hour-long journey of deeply felt spirituality, but Mbókò unveils far more with each and every spin ..."
- All About Jazz
On his album Mbókò, Cuban-born pianist and composer David Virelles takes the folkloric rhythms of Afro-Cuban religious ritual and incorporates them into 21st century music resonating with mystery and meaning. The main title Mbókò can mean “fundament” or “sugar cane” or “The Voice,” not the human voice but The Voice that is believed in Abakuá culture to be the voice of a spirit or spirits. Sound is an element revered in this culture and that idea, the worship of sound itself, was a shaping force in the creation of this album. Virelles has tapped into a musical impulse that is simultaneously ancient and modern, communal and personal, meditative and propulsive.
