The Christmas Revels is a series of annual holiday stage performances presented in the Boston area, led by conductor and composer George Emlen. Each year, the show journeys to a different time and place to explore a culture through its music and holiday rituals. This album, from the 2013 shows, is a collection of Spanish and Galician carols, dances and stirring processionals, played on the gaita galega, an indigenous Galician bagpipe. A lively band, anchored by guitar and harp and animated by tambourine and castanets, pulls listeners into boisterous village festivities; the fresh sound of children's voices is heard in Christmas lullabies and carols. The rugged and generous spirit of the Galician people comes to life through these traditional Nativity songs and rituals. In a timeless way, this recording is an enduring accompaniment for the winter holidays.
