"... the shamanistic elder statesman is surrounded by a formidable lineup of gifted youngbloods ... together, they stretch out before a wildly appreciative audience ... the results are scintillating."
- The Absolute Sound
"... shimmeringly beautiful ... Moran is an inspired inclusion. His percussive, chordal comping is a perfect foil for Lloyd's supple, diaphonous lines ... an awesome performance from an elder statesman who has kept the faith and shows no sign of slowing up. Long may he continue to delight and uplift us."
- All About Jazz
Released in March 2008 to celebrate saxophonist Charles Lloyd's 70th birthday, this rousing set was recorded live in Basel, Switzerland in April 2007, featuring a revamped Lloyd Quartet. Making his debut with Lloyd is pianist Jason Moran, whose percussive attack, with its echoes of Monk and Bud Powell, lights fires. In fact critics have called Rabo De Nube as much a showcase for Moran as it is for the bandleader himself. Drummer Eric Harland and double bassist Reuben Rogers complete the ensemble on this collection of old favourites, tender ballads and a tribute to Booker Little.
