"These are fine and detailed live recordings from the amazing Lockenhaus Festival ... no praise can be too high ... the whole work is held together superbly by Mãris Sirmais. The wonderfully controlled intonation of the Chamber Choir of Riga is top notch."
- MusicWeb International
"... it is time that there was a choice of interpretations of this wonderful piece ... (this) entry is a major asset to anyone’s library ... the sound on all tracks is clear and the ambient sound on the Canticle is that of a church, which fits these pieces well. It’s a fine recording of an unusual work."
- Fanfare
Two major works by Sofia Gubaidulina comprise this live album, both pieces recorded at the Lockenhaus Festival in Austria in 2006 and 2010 and released in January 2012 to mark the composer's 80th birthday. Violinist Gidon Kremer, a committed advocate of Gubaidulina’s work, is the soloist and Kremerata Baltica the ensemble on the premiere recording of The Lyre of Orpheus. Canticle Of The Sun revisits the celebrated piece that Gubaidulina wrote in tribute to Mstislav Rostropovich on the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1997. Rostropovich’s famously sunny disposition was an inspiration, by association prompting Gubaidulina to set St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle Of The Sun for choir. On this recording, Nicolas Altstaedt performs the highly expressive lead role.
