R.E.M.'s final studio recording, released in 2011, was the band's opportunity to walk away on its own terms. Bassist Mike Mills says the three members wanted to go out on a high note, while Michael Stipe has said that Collapse was intended as a 21st century version of an album for a generation possibly unfamiliar with the concept in the YouTube era. Recorded in Berlin, Nashville and New Orleans, Collapse Into Now features several guests, including vocalists Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Patti Smith and Peaches.
"We tried to enjoy it as much as possible and make it as fun as possible, but we’re not super-sentimental people in that sense. The only time we got really poignant was when we were working in Berlin ... there was no one there really except some friends, family and significant others and we knew that was probably the last time we would ever play together as R.E.M. That was a pretty fraught day. But it was fun."
