More than 35 years after its inception, the Yellowjackets continue to evolve artistically on Cohearence. Founding keyboardist Russell Ferrante, longtime reeds player Bob Mintzer and drummer Will Kennedy are joined by new recruit, virtuoso electric bassist Dane Alderson, on these songs featuring a range of jazz flavours, including a rousing Weather Report jazz fusion vibe, a swinging switch-up on John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, a moving rendition of a folk song classic, a funky soul-jazz excursion and the chamber jazz-like grace on the final track, Cohearence. The album plays out as a multifaceted document of how far the once fusion band has come.
