All the piano trios performed on this double album by pianist Michael Schäfer, violinist Ilona Then-Bergh and cello Wen-Sinn Yang share the subtitle À la memoire d’un grand artiste; the dedications serving as connecting links between the three works. The Rachmaninoff, for example, is dedicated to the great composer Tchaikovsky, while Goldenweiser’s trio is in turn dedicated to Rachmaninoff. On these selections, the trio members once again prove able explorers of forgotten repertoire. Only one recording of the Goldenweiser trio exists to date, with the composer himself at the piano.The Rachmaninoff trio is presented here for the first time in its original 1893 version (with added harmonium by Kang-Un Kim), practically unknown today.
