- All About Jazz
Rumi Songs is a song cycle composed by Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim based on the poetry of 13th century Persian mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, using the inspired contemporary English language versions as the source texts. Seim responds both to the musicality of the translations and to Rumi’s gifts as a storyteller while seemingly to have invented a new kind of Lieder with a Nordic-Oriental orientation. The lineup is strikingly unorthodox, with each of the quartet members bringing a unique musical personality to the material. Classical mezzo-soprano Tora Augestad, well known as the leader of her own ensemble, finds an intimate tone to convey Rumi’s thoughts, underlined by the elegant arrangements and the improvisational input of Seim, accordionist Frode Haltli and cellist Svante Henryson.
