"... remains an essential recording in the catalog of Dolphy and modern jazz cello repertory." - Jazz.com "I’ve never heard a remastering that so dramatically improved on the original as 1960’s Out There." - PopMatters.com "... an unusual album by any standard, approaching tonality in a non-linear and harshly harmonic way few others, before or after, have ever attempted." - LondonJazzCollector Out There from multi-reedman and composer, Eric Dolphy was in every way stunning, from the eerie cover painting to the starkly beautiful colours of an ensemble consisting of reeds, cello, bass, and drums, to the ways in which the compositions (four by Dolphy) fused bebop solos and ever-expanding freebop harmonies with contemporary classical chamber works. This was a deeply personal statement by a musician who in 1960 was beginning to establish himself as one of the most expressive instrumental voices of his time. Dolphy and a young Ron Carter heard here on cello rather than bass, interact throughout with a closeness bordering on the extrasensory. In 2006 Concord launched the Rudy Van Gelder Remasters series - a collection of reissues of some of the most iconic albums in the Prestige catalog, carefully remastered from the original analogue master tapes with 24-bit digital technology by the legendary and original recording engineer, Rudy Van Gelder.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
