Digital Booklet
The pairing of the two works on this album is unique as one comes from the dawn, the other from the dusk of Beethoven’s career. Whereas the composer wrote the Piano Quintet for winds and piano when he was only 26, he did not finish his String Quartet until a year before his death. The Edding Quartet presents the original version of the piece here, with the Grosse Fuge as final. The direct comparison of these compositions sheds vivid light on the fantastic distance Beethoven covered between the two points in time. The Edding Quartet and Northernlight join together once again on fresh readings of these masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire. Known as major interpreters of the Classical and Romantic repertoires, the two ensembles offer expert performances, refined and precise, of two of the German composer’s finest scores.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
