Released in 2008, this is the fourth installment in Noriko Ogawa's lavishly-praised five volume series devoted to Debussy's piano music. On the programme, Ogawa combines some of the composer's last masterpieces for the piano with rarely heard works. Among the highlights, the 12 Etudes represent Debussy's final, glorious spurt of creativity; dispensing with the catchiness of appealing titles and associations, Debussy regarded the pieces as a return to music in its purest form. The album also includes a rarely heard 13th étude, the Étude retrouvée, only discovered in 1977.
