"... blues-inspired tracks that take their cues from left field influences such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake." - Rolling Stone "... no exception to (Jay) Farrar's innovative approach ... the vintage Son Volt sound gives way to the distorted, chunky blues-rock riffs that dominate the album ... a pretty entertaining effort by these musical veterans ... Farrar has the talent and ability to write any kind of song he wants to, so it's nice to see him write the album he wants to write instead of pandering to a nostalgic fan base pining for mid-to-late '90s Son Volt ... a solid effort overall ..." - Exclaim! Notes of Blue was inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues most commonly known. Son Volt's Jay Farrar used the unique and haunting guitar tunings of Skip James, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Nick Drake as points of exploration for this collection, reflecting the blues in the folk tradition but heavily amplified. As a result, Notes of Blue features far more fingerpicking than previous Son Volt albums and even, a nod to McDowell, some bellowing, rambunctious slide. "To me there’s always been a mystique attached to those three tunings and those three performers. So I was compelled to get inside those tunings and see what was there. Skip James’ tuning in particular, supposedly has its origins in the Bahamas ... it has built into it kind of an intangible haunting effect. Something you can’t quite put your finger on but it’s there." - Jay Ferrar

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
