"Long a champion of Haydn rarities, Manfred Huss directs his trim period band with style, zest and a sharp ear for instrumental colour. Outstanding among the young cast are Raffaella Milanesi ... a soprano to watch ... and the bright, nimble Glauce of Jennifer O'Loughlin ... Haydn aficionados will welcome this fine premiere recording of a fragmentary work ... contains much delightful, spirited music." - Gramophone "... an excellent recording of rarely heard music by Haydn ... the sound of the individual instruments and of the voices is very clear, displaying a quality that one normally only obtains when in the live proximity of the musicians ... great artistic integrity and dedication to authenticity in bringing this work to life. It is certainly a wonderful tribute to Joseph Haydn ... it clearly proves, if proof were necessary, what a great composer he was." - MusicWeb International Haydn's vocal works may have been overshadowed by his symphonies, string quartets and piano sonatas, but he probably wrote as much vocal as instrumental music, in a variety of genres. Some of those compositions have since been lost, but the majority survived in more or less complete form. The earliest of these is Acide, the fragment of an opera written for the celebration of the wedding of Count Anton Esterházy and Countess Maria Theresia Erdödy. Much of the original 1763 version has been lost, but complementing the remaining numbers are two arias and a recitative composed by Haydn for a planned second production, which in the end came to nothing. Research into the different versions has been made by Manfred Huss, director of Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, who also assembled a cast of eminent singers to perform on this recording which took place in May 2008.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
