More than 40 years later, Mike Oldfield follows up his 1975 release Ommadawn with 2017's Return To Ommadawn, an acoustic, stringed instrument-based album entirely self-written, performed and produced. Oldfield rebuilt the original bodhrán and mandolin he played in 1975 and then acquired a handmade guitar which features heavily on these songs. He plays a total of 22 instruments here, including flamenco guitar, ukulele, acoustic bass, African drums, Celtic harp, tin whistle and a real glockenspiel. To connect the past and the present, he even recycled vocal bits from the original Ommadawn, cut them in pieces, treated them with sound effects, reversed them and edited them back together.
"Looking on social media, the first three albums 40 years later are still everybody’s favourite and Ommadawn more than Tubular Bells even. I think it’s because it’s a genuine piece of music rather than production: hands, fingers, fingernails. It didn’t have a goal; it was not trying to achieve anything nor please anybody. It was spontaneous music making, full of life. Doing Return To Ommadawn is like a return to my true self."
