The casalQuartett presents known and newly discovered gems from the musical treasure chest of Old Russia on this recording, featuring composers Anton Ferdinand Titz, Alexander Glazunov and Tchaikovsky. Titz dedicated his life to chamber music; with his colourful, brilliant quartets he himself founded a Russian tradition around 1800. Decades later Glazunov made a big sensation as a young composing daredevil. His witty, energetic set of masterpieces 5 Novellettes is full of technical refinements and glamorous esprit, but also contains a deep emotional devotion. Russian chamber music triumphed in the overwhelming orchestral sonority of Tchaikovsky's successful string quartet debut, which brings the programme to a close.
