Award-winning Canadian keyboardist Mark Edwards turned to fans and supporters to crowdfund his debut solo album Orpheus Descending, based on the story of mythological singer and lute player Orpheus. Edwards demonstrates the musical, expressive and communicative possibilities of the harpsichord on this collection of some of his favourite German and Dutch keyboard pieces, including his own transcription of a violin chaconne by J.S. Bach.
"As much as I love harpsichord music, there's no escaping the fact that it can sometimes be difficult, abstract and rather inaccessible ... for this project, I've chosen to focus on the music's potential for narrative. I've decided to base the CD on the story of Orpheus ... the story tells of his descent into the underworld to rescue his recently departed wife, Eurydice. Not only was this tale well known in the 17th and 18th centuries, it still makes for a compelling story today. Love, mortality, the power of music ... it's full of elements we can all relate to ... ultimately, I want this CD to open up audiences to new ways of listening to the harpsichord: not as a dry relic of the past, but as a medium for powerful, visceral storytelling in the present!"
