"... one of the central documents of post-war jazz ..."
- The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings
"Not a bad note and a lot of great ones, on a very difficult instrument, the trombone."
- NPR
"This is small group jazz at its finest with Clarke and Percy Heath in outstanding form, both providing a swinging foundation."
- Jazz.com
Bebop trombone great Jay Jay Johnson and saxophone player Jimmy Heath got together with rising star trumpeter Clifford Brown to record this 10-inch album in 1953. They were joined in the studio by John Lewis (piano), Percy Heath (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums), all three moonlighting from the Modern Jazz Quartet. This album has since become a kind of audio textbook for jazz trombonists and a career hallmark for Johnson. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings includes it in their "Core Collection" and awarded it a rare and coveted "crown." The material on this album has been repackaged and released as The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Volume 1.
