The sublime acoustics of St. Basil Chapel matched with architect Philip Johnson's dynamic and contrasting forms have created an extraordinary place for sacred music, celebrated here with the world premiere of David Ashley White's hauntingly lyrical Canzona for Oboe and Organ. Keyboardist Yuri McCoy and the University Singers, an auditioned ensemble of undergraduate and graduate music majors from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, present selections appropriate for traditional Roman Catholic and Anglo-Catholic worship and carefully chosen for the venue's specific acoustics.The recording also exploits the tremendous orchestral flexibility of the chapel's two manual Schoenstein organ, designed by Jack Bethards.
