American R&B duo Silk Sonic, composed of recording artists Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak release their debut studio album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, released via Aftermath Entertainment and Atlantic Records. Mars reunited with Christopher Brody Brown, while .Paak reached out to Domitille Degalle and JD Beck to write the album. Silk Sonic also recruited American musician Bootsy Collins for narration, and composers such as D'Mile to co-produce the album, which was recorded in 2017 and early 2020 to mid-2021. The album features lead singles "Leave the Door Open”, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart as Mars's eighth number one song in the United States and Paak's first, as well as “Skate” and "Smokin Out the Window”.
The project was inspired by the 1960s, 1970s, and "the old school", and according to Mars, after recording they would reunite in the studio during the night, drink and play music they enjoy. .Paak said the duo was influenced by Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder and Prince. To achieve the sound they were aiming for, the group reached out to elderly session musicians and read "old drumming magazines". They collected vintage gear like Ludwig drums with Remo Ambassador heads, Giovanni Hidalgo congas, a Hohner Clavinet D6 keyboard, a Danelectro sitar, a Trophy Music mini-Glockenspiel and a Solid State Logic mixing board. Afterward, they were "emulating old-school playing styles and recording them", using one or two mics and several musicians playing at the same time in the same place.
