Multiple award-winning Canadian pianist Joel Hastings recorded this recital only weeks before his sudden death in May 2016 at the age of 46. The programme is dedicated to Jean Roger-Ducasse, a close friend of Debussy and a composer of considerable reputation in his day, with one critic declaring that "all the best qualities of the French musician are combined in him: an abundantly rich imagination, clear and deep thought ... and unerring taste." The album features the world premiere of the solo piano arrangement of the Petite Suite along with works that range from exquisitely colourful wartime pieces to the playfully virtuosic, the alternately dreamy and dramatic and an innovative Romance that seems constantly on the brink of wandering away from tonal harmony.
