At Henry Purcell's funeral, the music he had himself written for the funeral of Queen Mary only eight months earlier was performed again for his burial. Soon after, several composers paid tribute to Purcell by writing odes in his memory, among them Jeremiah Clarke’s Ode on the Death of Henry Purcell, a deeply moving token of admiration. Like Purcell, Clarke was destined to die young, in his prime, leaving speculation about the destiny of British music had their lives been prolonged. Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique continue their exploration of the world of Purcell and 17th century English music with this collection of masterpieces coupling two of Purcell’s most popular works with an exceptional discovery.
