The Berliner Philharmoniker is directed by Herbert von Karajan in this stunning legacy recording of Strauss' Don Quixote and Horn Concerto No. 2! Deutsche Grammophon has lovingly transferred these performances from their original analog sources to high-fidelity digital formats.
Don Quixote, Op. 35 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss for cello, viola, and orchestra. Subtitled "Phantastische Variationen über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters" (Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character), the work is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Strauss composed this work in Munich in 1897.
Richard Strauss composed his Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, (TrV 283) whilst living in Vienna in 1942. The work was premiered in 1943 at the Salzburg Festival and was recorded in 1944, both with solo horn Gottfried von Freiberg. It was taken up and popularised by the British horn player Dennis Brain. It has since become the most performed and recorded horn concerto of the 20th century.
