Centred around Saint-Saëns’s Danse macabre, this album from the Hermès Quartet presents an unknown aspect of the French mélodie of the fin de siècle. Based on sometimes very intimate texts by Rimbaud, Baudelaire or Verhaeren, among others, these works externalized, over a century ago, the existential malaise of mankind. The rare contralto tone of Sarah Laulan serves the ambiguity of these mélodies that deploy by turns darkness but also humour, provocation and cynicism. Also featured on various pieces are pianist Maciej Pikulski and violinist Omer Bouchez.
