Although it was released in 1961, Lush Life consists of stockpiled tracks John Coltrane had recorded in 1957 and 1958 with various sidemen including his Miles Davis Quintet bandmates pianist Red Garland, drummer Art Taylor and bassist Paul Chambers, as well as Donald Byrd on trumpet, bassist Earl May and drummers Louis Hayes and Albert "Tootie" Heath.
