British composer Nigel Clarke grew up surrounded by brass band music, an experience apparent in his concerto for cornet, Mysteries of the Horizon, which makes full virtuosic use of that instrument, performed with dexterity by Harmen Vanhoorne. The concerto is paired with Clarke’s Symphony No. 1 for Speaker & Wind Orchestra "A Richer Dust”, a much darker work which reflects on the constant presence of violence in human existence and incorporates text by Danish writer Malene Sheppard Skærved.
