A collector of folksong who worked at the same time as Bartók was documenting music throughout Hungary, Joel Engel journeyed to Jewish communities (Shtetlekh) in Eastern Europe gathering Yiddish songs and instrumental pieces, using these as inspiration for his own compositions. This made Engel a key figure in the art music revival of Jewish music in the 20th century, and thus of great historical and cultural but also artistic importance today. This release from Toccata Classics sees various artists, including mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway, perform a rich collection of Engel's folk-influenced compositions, including his Dybbuk Suite for the play of the same name by Belarusian Jewish author and folklorist S. Ansky.
