Finnish pianist Joonas Ahonen unites sonatas by the innovative early 20th-century composer Charles Ives on this release for BIS. The collection open with the Violin Sonata No. 4 “Children's Day at the Camp Meeting”, inspired by Ives's childhood memories of the Christian revival movement, and for which Ahonen is joined by violinist and compatriot Pekka Kuusisto. The centrepiece of the release, however, is the monumental “Concord” Piano Sonata, years ahead of its time, whose movements are named after important figures of the transcendentalism movement, including the Alcott family.
