The Chelys Consort of Viols are joined by soprano Emma Kirkby and lutenist James Akers to present A Pleasing Melancholy, a collection of solemn pieces from the English Renaissance. Centred around works by the famous composer and lutenist John Dowland, this release also includes pieces by Robert Jones, Tobias Hume, and John Danyel, all of which explore the then fashionable affect of melancholy. The highlight of the album is Dowland's Lachrimæ "Seven Tears", a collection of pavanes and other pieces which made Dowland famous, and which are performed with heart wrenching intensity here by Akers, Kirkby, and the Consort.
