Digital Booklet
The years between 1900 and 1914 are perhaps among the most exciting and varied in European music history. They develop what is commonly referred to today as musical modernity. It is the time when the great European “schools” of the musical avant-garde are taking shape in Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg and especially Vienna, and when music and musical life are diversifying into a variety of aesthetics, styles and genres , which is reflected in the multitude of terms with which we try to get hold of the art of this epoch today: Impressionism, Expressionism, Art Nouveau, Neoclassicism, Folklorism, Late Romanticism/Post-Romanticism, Symbolism, etc. Many of the works of classical music that are often played today Modern ones emerge in those years immediately before the First World War. 1913 was also the year of scandalous world premieres: Arnold Schönberg's Gurrelieder, Alban Berg's Altenberglieder and Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. The program selection on this album is grouped around two works that were created in Vienna in 1913, in this "summer of the century" (Florian Illies), which ends the long 19th century and heralds the dark 20th century: Alban Berg's Four Pieces for clarinet and piano op. 5 and Egon Kornauth's sonata op. 5 for clarinet and piano. There are also two songs by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and the late F minor clarinet sonata op. 120.1 by Johannes Brahms from 1894, whose musical aura can still be felt in Vienna in the early 20th century.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
