"The folk song! I've lived in it since I was a kid. A folk song contains the whole person: his body, his soul, his environment, everything around him. Whoever grows up with national music grows into a complete human being. A folk song has spirit because it carries within it a real human being, whose culture is God-given and not acquired from outside.”
With this emotional and absolutely honest statement, Leoš Janáček summarized his lifelong fascination with folk songs during a stay in London in 1926. For Leoš Janáček (1854–1928), folklore was undoubtedly one of the main sources of his work as a composer. Moravian Dances, Lachian Dances and the Suite for Orchestra op. 3 can be heard on this album.
Akira Ifukube (1914–2006) was one of the greatest composers on the contemporary music scene in his native country. At the same time, he gave Western listeners an insight into Japanese musical culture. Although he is best known for his film scores - he composed the scores for more than 250 films, the Godzilla series being particularly well known - his heart was in the world of classical music. His Japanese Suite, composed in 1933, can be heard here. Ifukube wrote it after hearing recordings of Spanish music performed by the American pianist George Copeland (1882–1971). The original piano version of the suite is dedicated to Copeland. The first movement was performed by Alexander Cherepnin in 1936; the entire piano suite was first performed in 1938 at the Venice Festival of Contemporary Music. The orchestral version of the piano suite was composed decades later and premiered in 1991.
According to Ifukube, a composer must always be honest with himself; he should resist modern trends while following his own conviction and artistic intuition: “Art must transcend the diversity of nations and reach the common human essence.” Lenka Bočanová
