"Four Stars ... well recorded ... fine teamwork and a strong feeling for Bowen’s idiom ... a valuable introduction to a formidably well equipped, if doggedly conservative, late Romantic composer." - BBC Music Magazine "... the Gould Piano Trio and friends perform all this enticing repertoire with matchless understanding ... they have been afforded glowingly realistic sound by the Chandos production team. Not to be missed." - Gramophone "If you have ever wondered about Bowen’s music but never previously taken the plunge, or if you have heard Bowen’s music previously and wondered what all the fuss was about, this is the disc that will 'sell' you on it. Ten stars, easily." - Fanfare After years of neglect, the works of York Bowen are reaching ever growing audiences, thanks in part to albums like this from the Gould Piano Trio with clarinetist Robert Plane, violinist Mia Cooper and violist David Adams. The Piano Trio in E Minor is arguably Bowen’s masterpiece of chamber music, one of the finest by a British composer. It features a natural fluency and melodic expression that are hallmarks of Bowen’s output. The Phantasy Quintet is fascinating for its virtually unique combination of bass clarinet and string quartet. Also included is the first movement from the unfinished early Piano Trio in D Minor, edited for this premiere recording by the Gould Piano Trio.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
