Jazz drummer Louis Hayes played with a host of jazz greats including Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, and Oscar Peterson and his notorious ensemble nurtured the talents of such notable sidemen as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron and James Spaulding. In this 1979 album, his sextet takes on a mix of well-known stardards and fresh originals with the incredibly unique vocal styles of Leon Thomas on Little SUnflower and Nisha. A brilliant soulful, jazz release with funk elements, Variety Is the Spice was given new life in 2007 when The Brand New Heavies and Q-Tip sampled Dance With Me for their Sometimes Remix.
