On this release, soprano Isa Katharina Gericke and Joachim Knoph perform some of the more central pieces from Norwegian composer Johan Kvandal's (1919–1999) music for voice and piano. Kvandal was a heavyweight of the Norwegian music scene and his music has proven to reach more and more new listeners. He was often inspired by Norwegian folk music, and employed a strong tonal principle in his compositions – in what he later referred to as "modern tonality". This album represents a cross section of the aesthetic choices he made. Kvandal's musical journey is not altogether dissimilar to other contemporary Norwegian composers such as Tveitt and Egge, all in the wake of the monumental influence of Edvard Grieg. The challenge was to acquire the requisite technical craft, determine its place within musical tradition, and at the same time find his own voice.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
