The Cello in Wartime sees Steven Isserlis (cello) and Connie Shih (piano) commemorate centenaries related to the First World War with a collection of solo and accompanied works by art music composers from France, Britain, and Australia alongside popular songs. The first half of the programme presents moving pieces by Debussy, Fauré, Webern, Saint-Saëns, and Frank Bridge, while the second presents arrangements of pieces heard in the trenches of Ypres with Isserlis performing on a so-called ‘trench cello’, a make shift instrument made from found objects.
