“Philip Thomas makes the piano part magnetic, like the centrifugal planet in an erratic constellation... Sixty years on, 83-year-old Christian Wolff has written a companion piece for Cage’s concerto that should feel like a throwback... But Wolff’s music, his gracious, urgent way of questioning how we relate to each other, still feel entirely relevant.”
- Kate Molleson, The Guardian
Pianist Philip Thomas and contemporary music ensemble Apartment House present an album which brings together two works by experimental composers of the New York School, John Cage and his colleague Christian Wolff. Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra is widely considered a seminal work, and it is accompanied here by Wolff's 2017 work Resistance, making for a pairing which explores the myriad possibilities of scores and interactions between musicians.
