"Performances of both works are exemplary and hugely touching."
- BBC Music Magazine

"Editor's Choice ... qualities in this version which commend it over and above others lie in the imaginative and stylistically assured direction of Rinaldo Alessandrini ... (he) has come up with ideas which probe deeper than many, in his aim to bring the piece to life with expressive fervour."
- Gramophone

Both Pergolesi's famous Stabat Mater and Scarlatti's setting, with its superbly flowing polyphony, show a positively theatrical concern with expressiveness, whether dramatic or poignant, and musical illustration of the text. These features are brought to the fore in the interpretations on this 2002 release which brushes aside a few misconceptions and uses the original dynamics and tempos to thrilling effect. The solo vocalists, soprano Gemma Bertagnolli and contralto Sara Mingardo, have been praised for their performances, accompanied here by the equally-praiseworthy Rinaldo Alessandrini conducting his own early music ensemble Concerto Italiano.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
