The Arditti String Quartet enjoys a worldwide reputation for spirited and technically refined interpretations of contemporary and early 20th century music. Several hundred string quartets have been written for the ensemble since its foundation in 1974. Their performance of Schoenberg's La nuit transfigurée as heard here has become the benchmark for the work. For this 1993 recording the quartet was augmented to a sextet with the addition of guests on additional viola and cello.
