"And like those black-and-white images of inmates of a mental hospital in the 1960s, Mr. Hersch’s music is beautiful in a timeless, eternal-night sort of way."
- The New York Times
The FLUX Quartet has fully committed themselves to the quartets of Michael Hersch which were inspired by etching and lithographs American artist Michael Mazur did in the 1960s in a Rhode Island mental institution. This ensemble brings out this haunting imagery in their performance of these profoundly intense and at times frightening compositions.
“These compositions are filled sometimes with frightening sounds. They are unrelenting, nearly without hope… But no artwork can be without hope since it is in the very nature of creative work to be optimistic, if only in as much as we continue to work through everything but our own death.”
- Michael Mazur
