Daniel Hope is celebrating 30 years of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, of which he is Artistic Director, with a new album. Music For A New Century forms a cross-section of composing in post-modern times. The four works collected here were all commissioned by the New Century Chamber Orchestra (partly in cooperation with other institutions), which shows the enthusiasm with which this orchestra is committed to new compositions and contemporary classical music.
The ensemble premiered Philip Glass’s Third Piano Concerto in 2017 on the US West Coast in 2018; the other three works are world premiere recordings: "Lament for solo violin and Strings" by Mark-Anthony Turnage, the "Double Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings" by Tan Dun and a brand new anniversary composition by Jake Heggie. The soloist on the piano is the Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov. The works span a remarkable range of musical ideas and styles.
"You wouldn't spontaneously associate these four composers with each other. But with this combination, we celebrate the orchestra and its creative exploration of new music.”
- Daniel Hope
