Bassist/Singer Tonina releases her new album, Black Angel! The artist is a rapidly emerging favourite on he St. Louis music scene, defying categorization along the way. The album is a collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Javier Limon. She recorded the album for his Casa Limon label while studying in Valencia, Spain.
“I don’t know my place quite yet ... I can’t play jazz, and I don’t think anyone really thinks I’m jazz, though I have jazz instruments. So I guess that’s the closest thing. But I don’t fit in any category ... folk is definitely of the people. And my songs are very much my community’s experience, black women’s experience, women’s experience. It’s not folk like Mumford & Sons or Joni Mitchell, but soul. They’re my stories, my voice.”
