When We Find Ourselves Alone is Rodney Whitaker’s eighth recording as a leader, showing he hasn’t neglected to carve out time for creative development since leaving the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in 2003, with which he played bass for six years. The ambiance on this 2014 release is similar to what Whitaker generated on his previous albums recorded for small independent labels, drawing repertoire from several stylistic tributaries. A family affair, Whitaker is joined on the album by his daughter Rockelle Fortin on vocals on five tunes.
